Panel formed to hide irregularities in groundnut purchase: Gujarat Congress

The state government’s announcement for a judicial probe in cases of fires in groundnut warehouses isn’t cutting much ice with the Congress. The Opposition party said today that the Commission had been formed to ensure that irregularities in groundnut procurement do not come out.

The Congress held a large event in Banaskantha to protest against the irregularities in groundnut purchase. The party alleged that Rs400 crore had been spent on groundnut procurement in Banaskantha, even though there is little production of the crop in the region, and alleged massive irregularities in the process.

“There has been massive corruption in the procurement of groundnut. As against our demand to hold an inquiry in the scam by a sitting judge of high court, the state government has formed a Commission that will be headed by a retired judge. We believe this is to divert attention and to hide the scam. We have seen the Gujarat government doing the same in several other scams,” state Congress president Amit Chavda, said.
