Rahul Gandhi kicks off campaign in North Gujarat, claims credit for GST rate cut

Continuing his campaign in the poll-bound state of Gujarat, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi began his Navsarjan Yatra from Chiloda in Gandhinagar. He also visited Akshardham Temple and offered prayers to Lord Swaminarayan.

A day after GST Council’s decision to cut tax rates on 178 items of daily use, Rahul Gandhi claimed the credit saying, “It is good that the Congress party and the people of this country pressurised BJP to bring down many items from 28% bracket to 18%.”

However, continuing his attack against the government, Gandhi said the Congress would continue to fight for a 18-per cent cap on the highest GST slab instead of the current 28 per cent, and vowed that the party would get the job done “if the ruling BJP doesn’t”.

Refering to GST as Gabbar Singh Tax, the Congress leader said that the country needs a simple tax and that the current system requires structural changes.

The aim of GST is to break the backbone of India and strengthen the backbones of a selected few industrialists, he said.

Rahul Gandhi also attacked BJP over the alleged company profits of Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah. Crtiticising the Prime Minister over his silence, Gandhi said, “Modiji kuch toh boliye”

Taking a jibe at PM Modi, the Congress scion said, “ We gave Rs 35,000 Crore for MGNREGA but PM Modi gave Rs 35,000-crore for Tata Nano project. Modi government snatched your land for Nano. Do you this see car? This government is only for 5-10 capitalists.”

He also launched a scathing attack against the noteban excercise. “The government which can tell people at 8 pm that it is going to demonetise currency within four hours, doesn’t know what is in the hearts of people.”
