20% reservation for ‘poor’ in civic body jobs: Cong

The Gujarat Congress on Tuesday promised 20% job reservation in schools managed by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation and in the civic body for all those coming from the economically weaker section.

Releasing the manifesto for the November 22 municipal corporation polls, the Congress said that the 20% reservation will not affect the existing 49% reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs.

Party leaders said that they will initiate legal procedure to implement the new reservation once it comes to power.
This job reservation, based on economic criteria, is significant in light of the Patidars quota stir agitation. Congress has already declared support for reservation for economically backward classes coming in the upper castes or non-reserved categories.

The manifesto was released in the presence of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) leaders Arjun Modhwadia, city Congress chief Kuvarji Bavalia and others.

The manifesto also promises 40 minute water supply daily in the city and vocational training centres in each ward to generate self-employment.

Congress also promised that there will no new tax burden on citizens in the next five years and the present house tax structure will also be reviewed. “Senior citizens and widows who are living alone will be exempt from house tax. There will be no taxes in the newly merged Vavdi and Kotharia areas until the basic civic amenities are provided,” the manifesto stated.
