Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who started his three-day tour of central Gujarat on Monday, took on the BJP government in the state over its development claims. He said Vikas (development) had gone crazy.

“Gujarat me Vikas ko kya hua? Ye kaise pagal hua? Ye jhooth sun sun kar pagal ho gaya hai (What has happened to development in Gujarat? Why has it gone crazy? It has done so after listening to the constant lies,” Gandhi said at a public meeting in Kheda.

Gandhi started his three-day yatra in central Gujarat from Hathijan in Ahmedabad, after which he travelled to Kheda. This was followed by him offering prayers at the Santram Mandir.

Gandhi, who is tipped to replace his mother Sonia as the party president later this month, also visited the birthplace of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Nadiad and paid tribute to him.

Besides Ahmedabad, Gandhi will travel to Kheda, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, Anand, Dahod, Godhra and Vadodara during his three-day yatra.

Gandhi also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that economic growth has fallen sharply due to the government’s poor policies. He also slammed the government for demonetisation, which had led to huge job losses, and hasty implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The Congress leader also said that unlike the Prime Minister, who only speaks through Mann ki Baat, the Congress would also listen to people.

Later, Gandhi interacted with women members of milk cooperatives. He also talked to traders, entrepreneurs and professionals in Vadodara, where he again spoke about low economic growth and demonetisation.

On the second day of his tour, Gandhi is slated to visit Sankalp Bhumi, a memorial to Baba Saheb Ambedkar. He will also interact with students, Asha workers and anganwadi workers. He will travel to Chhota Udepur district in the second half of the day for various programmes.

Gandhi, who had travelled across Saurashtra for four days in September, is expected to undertake similar yatras in north and south Gujarat for two to three days each, before the Assembly polls.
